The Know Your Customer (KYC) process for the telecom subscribers has been simplified now. The KYC process allows customers to subscribe to a new SIM service without any need of contact, papers, and saves everyone a lot of time. Ashwini Vaishnaw, telecom minister of India tweeted that KYC process has been simplified for the telecom subscribers. For the unaware, the measure was announced with the relief package for the industry.

Government Reintroduces e-KYC for Telecom Subscribers

The government has reintroduced Aadhar based e-KYC for the issue of new mobile connections. For the same, the telcos will be charged Rs 1 per customer for the authentication by UIDAI. The best thing is that it is completely a digital process. The customer’s picture along with the demographic details are provided to the telecom operators by the UIDAI. The customer can now get a SIM card delivered to his/her home without going anywhere to complete the KYC process. The self-KYC can be done electronically with the help of verification from UIDAI or DigiLocker. Further, the government said that users can convert from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa service simply with the help of a One Time Password (OTP). The user doesn’t need to go to a retail outlet of any telco to complete the process. Everything can now be done sitting in the home. Presently, for completing the process, a user needs to travel to a Point of Sale (retail outlet) keeping his/her original identity document for the verification process. This takes a lot of time for both the customer and the company in issuing a new SIM. But with the help of the new measures now customers will be able to do everything from getting a new SIM to converting prepaid to postpaid or vice versa simply sitting at the home. The changes were much needed and will save everyone a lot of time.
