In its recommendations for the 5G spectrum auction, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has slashed the reserve price of spectrum by 35%. The recommendations have left many disappointed. Pradeep S Mehta, Secretary General, CUTS International, said the TRAI has given some relief to the telecom sector by reducing the reserve price of the airwaves. However, the price reduction wasn’t enough. As per Mehta, the regulatory body has failed to recognise the paying capacity of the telcos....

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has rolled out a major tariff order for the telcos. According to the regulator’s order, the telcos can’t offer differential tariffs via their commercial partners. The sector regulator has said that the telcos can only offer tariffs that have been reported to the authorities. This is because offering anything else through the commercial partners is discriminatory and “contravene” the current rules set around pricing by the regulator....

The need for capacity building in the telecom sector is growing with 5G on the way. As per the recent development of events, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its latest move, has announced that feature phone users will very soon be able to make UPI payments. The announcement came earlier this week and was made by the RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das stating that digital payments will be allowed for feature payments. US Federal Communications Commission Chairman said that the Indian government needs to auction 5G spectrum at a reasonable price for local telecom operators. Ajit Pai also said that both India and the US need to quickly move together on 5G. “Our suggestions might be to follow some of the market-based strategies, for example, to allow flexible use of spectrum and not to prescribe what particular applications or services that spectrum must be used for and let the market decide that…also to hold free and open spectrum auctions with relatively reasonable reserve prices to enable spectrums’ deployment to the highest value to the user,” Pai said at the U....
